A skin-contact white from the mountains of Trás-os-Montes — 60–80-year-old mixed plantings of native varieties, 11 days of maceration, and a story that starts with one woman moving back to a village of 45 people to make wine.
Malvasia, Bastardo Branco, Formosa, Verdelho • Trás-os-Montes • Skin contact • 2,577 bottles
In 2017 Aline Domingues left Paris and moved back to Uva — her parents’ village, nestled between mountains at 1,800ft elevation on clay soils, surrounded by dovecotes and old vineyards that residents still tend for their own consumption. She rents plots from her neighbours, buys their grapes, and makes wine from vines between 40 and 100 years old that have never been replanted or recloned. The Ciste Branco comes from several small clay-soil plots: destemmed and macerated for 11 days before pressing, then aged 15 months in stainless steel without fining or filtration. 2,577 bottles.
The village is called Uva. Portuguese for grape. The name earns itself.
